About Us
Amy is originally from
Argentina
and after living in the United States for many years,
returned with her husband Ray to create and run
Conventillo de Lujo. Together with Amy´s sister Susanna,
they have been welcoming guests from all over the world since 2006.
The Conventillo de Lujo – luxury Conventillo takes
inspiration for its name from the areas where tango had its
beginnings in the areas where immigrants lived as they came to
Argentina to take advantage of work opportunities in the expanding
agricultural sector. The conventillos were buildings that
featured a common area where people would socialize from the many
apartments surrounding it. Early tango flourished around
these areas. Amy & Ray took this concept, added a generous
helping of comfort and style and created their luxury apartments
with the flavor of tango.
More about Amy & Ray….
Amy grew up in Argentina and had danced since she was a
child, standing on her father's feet as he danced intricate tango
steps around the room. In contrast, Ray was born in Alabama
and grew up in Indiana USA , within a family religion which
prohibited dancing. Ray took his first dance class in his 40´s
´´just to see what it was like´´ and hasn't stopped since. Amy
and Ray met at a Saturday afternoon hustle class in Michigan USA
in the 1980´s and they continued to dance ballroom. Amy competed
successfully in ballroom competitions.
In 1993 Amy and Ray founded the Latin & Argentine Tango
Club of Detroit and they married in 1998. Tango was virtually
unknown in Michigan when the club started. Amy´s dream was to fill
the dance floors of Michigan with people loving and dancing tango.
Amy and Ray taught and performed tango as they developed the
club over 15 years. During this time the club grew to over 350
members who are known as the Motor City Milongueros. During
this time Amy and Ray trained with the masters of tango and
arranged for some of them to teach at the club. They also organized
group trips for club members to visit Buenos Aires to
experience dancing in the birthplace of tango. As Amy and Ray
organized the trips from the USA, Susana was in Argentina finding
the right accommodation and trips to ensure the success. This
experience inspired the idea of creating their own accommodation for
visitors and they purchased the building in 2004 and remodeled it to
create Conventillo de Lujo.
Amy and Ray now live full time in Buenos Aires and
look forward to welcoming you to their Conventillo de Lujo.
